Safer Internet Day 2018
Safer Internet Day is being celebrated around the world on Tuesday 6 February 2018.
The theme is Create, connect and share respect: a better internet starts with you.
This brief guide is to help parents support their children online.
Everyone has their part to play in making the internet a better place, including you.
Have a look at the following suggestions on how to get started with supporting your child to stay safe and positive online.
A better internet starts with you:
Talk to your child about how they use technology, what are their favourite sites and services and ask how it makes them feel? If you're not sure where to begin, we'd like to help.
It starts with a balanced approach:
It's natural to feel worried about the risks posed online but for young people it is exciting and fun, as it brings so many opportunities. Try asking your child to share the things they like but also discuss the risks they can come across.
It starts with using the tools available to you:
There are lots of tools to help you manage the devices used by your family. For example, knowing how to activate and use parental controls can help protect them from seeing inappropriate content.
It starts with knowing where to get help:
It can sometimes feel like young people are the experts in all things online, but remember - you are the life experts. You are always there to help your child but you can get support too. Need help? Here is a fantastic page.
You can also use privacy settings on social media, these do not set up automatically so ensure you do so when the new account is launched.
